How to save $3750 on Curtains

This is what I saw for sale today at One King's Lane.  I almost spit my coffee out when I saw the price:

Here is the description:

Cotton Window Treatments, 2 Panels

$699.00
$3,800.00 Retail
Condition: vintage, antique or gently used

They're by Nate Berkus, and as you can see, they're sold out.

I don't really want to start the week off with a rant, but COME ON.  Seriously?  I love Nate, but to me, this is just plain CRAZY.

Here is what I'll say in (sort of) defense of the price, and you can decide for yourself:
  1. They're really big -- 142"W x 120"H, and you get two of them.
  2. They're vintage OR used (Vintage, maybe.  Used?  Not for me.  Not telling us which they are....definitely not for me)
  3. They're for track systems (again, not a plus for me, but may be for others)
  4. If you don't want a track, you can spend even more to retrofit for rods.
Here is how you can save $3750 on these  (because they are sold out, I assume to get these, you'll need to spend $3800).  My version is $50 for two panels:

Buy these 100% cotton panels at Target -- they have 63", 84" and 95"

The 84" length, which people use the most, are a very reasonable $35 a pair, with about $5 for shipping.  You'll also need trim of your choice (about $5 for grossgrain ribbon), and fabric glue (about $5).

All you do is add trim with fabric glue or double sided iron-on tape from your sewing store.  Can you tell I will do anything NOT to have to sew?   I'm a huge fan of iron-on tape, fabric glue (Tic Tac is the best), and spray glue).

I did this in my bedroom, and used 2" grossgrain ribbon from Michael's:

I love these particular Target panels because they are "back tabs" - I love the clean look (no rings) and they hang really well.

Of course, to make them look even more like the Nate Berkus ones, you could add blackout lining and use 4" trim.   I am making similar ones in my dining room, and I am going to inset the ribbon a few inches. The options are endless.

So, there is how you can save $3750 on your curtains.

That's it for today....  Thank you all for reading.  I hope you'll consider sharing and/or subscribing!

Gosh! WHOOOOO would pay that much for those curtains?? I'm sorry if anyone that's reading this did it, but I'd NEVER pay that much for curtains sold online. First, I can't see it, touch it, so no... not paying that much. The case changes a little when it's custom made, but even so, that's too much money!

I love your bedroom and your tips. I was thinking about this the other day. I think you've said about curtains before (was it at Tina's blog? Behind the blogger) and I wanted to know more. Now, I know! :-)

Thanks, sweetie and I hope you're feeling better!

Have a blessed week!!!

That's insane!!! Who pays $4000 for curtains? They're pretty and all, but SERIOUSLY? Yours are awesome and apparently, you could sell them for $3800. Kinda makes you feel good, right?

LOL, I almost spit my coffee out, too, when I opened up my email this morn. I love your version and will have to try it myself! Thanks!

I'm sorry but who really pays that much for this stuff? Thanks for posting a great alternative and I love using stitch witchery and the like on my curtains as well so I don't have to sew! Your room is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like your version MUCH better! I'd take the other $650 & buy me some new lamps & a chic mirror! LOL :-)

I am totally with you! Those are crazy priced! Yours look chic and expensive, great DIY!

I might consider paying $3,800 if Nate himself came wrapped in the curtains!
I love your banding suggestion - sewing is the bane of my existence!
Have a lovely Monday, Stacy!

Who in the world could pay that for a pair of curtains. Are we going crazy or what?!
You´ve done a wonderful job with your bedroom, not only with the curtains but with ALL of it. Congratulatios, and if that´s an example of your work I predict a lot of success for you!

Well said! I have noticed a lot of nonsense pricing on One Kings Lane. So Nate might have priced them at $400 and the owners jacked it up a few grand more...I don't know who is shopping over there, but it isn't me.

Stacy, I just love your take on this! That is such a waste of money to buy the original ones and yours look amazing! I always wonder who buys stuff like that - are they really going to brag to someone about how much they cost??? Even with limitless funds I would find that really silly to pay that much...maybe people just get beyond the point of even looking at the price? Ridiculous! And, well done on your part. :)

artluvr said...

I'm with Amy. When I looked at that sale, and many others of late, I have often found the prices ridiculous for what's being sold. As Stacy has so ably pointed out, it's not like these were one-of-a-kind and unduplicatable (I think I just made that word up). Plus, you get more descriptive text and pictures on eBay! If I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'll click over to 1stDibs, thank you! That being said, if the OKL powers-that-be can get those prices from their shoppers, then I don't suppose things will change anytime soon.

Totally crazy! I love your take. When I first read your post, I thought you spit your coffee out b/c you thought it was a good deal! LOL! Your bedroom is stunning! M.

Wow your bedroom is GORGEOUS with a capital G!!!!!!!!! Love how you think, soooo smart! It would be so ridiculous to pay that kind of money even if it was within a budget, its just so ridiculous.....You could teach them a thing or two!

Fabulous! I have 5 windows in my master bedroom and really need to find a reasonable way to add drapes without breaking the bank. Thanks so much.

Coley said...

for $4000 those curtains should be laced in diamonds and crystals. Haha, ok maybe not that far but still... that's ridiculous. Plus, yours look way better!!

I watch sales at One Kings Lane, I have to laugh myself most of the time. I bought some drapes from the Pottery Barn Outlet for my formal dining and living rooms that face the front of my home. I wanted when you looked at the windows to see matching drapes from the outside. On the inside I took the pair for my dinning room and bought ball type fringe in coordinating colors and sewed them from top to bottom on the inside of both panels. That distinguished the dinning room drapes from the simple no frill living room pair and definitely at a much cheaper cost than these drapes where.

I too have been surprised by the prices on Kings site. I have seen many things at Home Goods for 1/4 the price, and they look like the exact same thing. Real bargins!
As for Nate's site as well, way overpriced! I love Nate, but come on, he talks about saving money doing things yourself, but he sells those things for way way too much!

You won't ever catch me paying this kind of money on drapes! Your bedroom is gorgeous and the drapes look just as nice as Nates.

Oh my gosh!!! Im so glad you posted this.. I went on that site and saw some things that were so over priced I couldn't believe it. I would never spend that kind of money on curtains if I had that kind of money.

I love your bedroom so much... beautiful ♥ and wow.. love the chandeliers. I love your blog so fun.

Oh darn.. I forgot to ask you about your bedside tables?? where did you find those? hmmm... seems like you should be living by me so you could redo my bedroom *grin*

Taylor Greenwalt said...

I am with ya all! That is insane. I would not buy used drapers for that price ever. You could buy brand new fabric and have them custom made for that price.

Kathysue said...

Whoa!! That is crazy!!! I went to the sale and I was blown away at most of the asking prices on the items. I love that you showed your curtains in comparison!!! It goes to show that good design does not have to cost a fortune!! xo Kathysue

Holy crap, Nate! I thought you were suppose to be like the designer for the masses?!? (c: This is a totally brilliant idea and I'm pretty sure I need to do this, like, *YESTERDAY*! And you had my heart at "no-sew", LOVE.

I actually know people who would pay that much for curtains. I cannot relate at all, even if I did have the $, I couldn't do it! Too many starving children in the world :-).

I really like the way those look. That's kind of a lot of money though for some curtains.:) Esp if they are "used" I think you definitely did the right thing.:) I love making my own curtains.

You have done a wonderful job with your bedroom, not only with the curtains but with all arrangements. I think you definitely did the right thing, I am a new follower of your blog.

I'm glad someone else almost spit their coffee out, too. I know I almost did. When I saw the price I just stared at the curtains trying to figure out what would make them cost so much. The fabric, who once owned them, the vintage or "circa" date? I just couldn't figure it out. And as one commenter stated, OKL didn't offer much in the description. I'm sure there are some who could easily afford these curtains(obviously since they did sell), but why? My take is that some designers feel they can command outrageous prices just on their name recognition. (Nothing against Nate , because I do like him.)

Karen T. said...

BTW, love your curtains so much better than the ones on OKL. I like how you only did the trim on the leading edges. Thanks for the tip on how to get the look for so much less.

Love this post! OKL does have some interesting things but the prices are OUTRAGEOUS sometimes. As you said, these are plain white cotton curtains...not spun silk by special little silk worms that took 50 years to make enough thread to make these.

These are tough times for the country and quite frankly the world, I think everyone is looking to save a dime, even if that price in within your budget. Thanks for sharing your way of saving money and your source.

I laughed out loud at your sewing comment. Have a great day.
